SIGHTS      THE NATIONAL GALLERY The most important Art Institute in the country, holding examples of contemporary Greek artistic wealth. Exhibitions are also held of major domestic and foreign artists.        PLAKA The "district of the gods", the "district of romantics", at the foot of the sacred rock of the Acropolis. An attraction for tourists seeking the local colour of old Athens.     ZAPPION The Zappion is a majestic semicircular hall with wide chambers and an open atrium in the centre. Its foundations were laid in 1874 by the architect Fr. Boulanger and it was completed through a grant from Evangelos Zappas under the supervision of Konstandinos Zappas. A space for exhibitions, international conferences and ceremonies, such as the entry of our country into the EEC, and more recently the headquarters of the bid for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.     THE POLYTECHNIO The "Metsovio" National Technical University is an Institute of Higher Education in the Applied Sciences. It is housed in a neo-classical building designed by Kaftatzoglou. Since 1974, its name has been linked with the idea of freedom and the struggle against dictatorship.     THE NATIONAL LIBRARY Papyruses, codices, rare editions and over 1,000,000 notable books make it the most important library in the country. Established in 1828 in Egina by Ioannis Kapodistrias, it moved to Athens in 1834. The University of Athens held it until 1903, when it was housed in the neo-classical building on Panepistimiou Street donated by the Valliani brothers and designed by the architect Theophil Hansen.     THE ATHENS ACADEMY An intellectual centre to develop the sciences, arts and letters. An imposing architectural jewel designed by Theophil Hansen and financed by the national benefactor, Simon Sinas, it was built between 1859 and 1863, and 1868 and 1885. The statues outside are by the sculptor, Leonidas Drosis.     THE NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM The National Archaeological Museum of Athens, was built during the last century (1886-1889), and besides being an architectural jewel, is a treasure-trove of ancient Greek art.     THE KALLIMARMARO In 1896, the first modern Olympics took place here. In 2004, the return of the Games to their birth-place will once more bestow upon them their original message: that those who contribute to the creation of immortal works remain immortal in the memory and in the heart.       THE OBSERVATORY A scientific institute for the study of heavenly bodies and seismology, it is located on Nymphon Hill at a height of 107 m above sea level. Its construction was begun in 1846 and completed in 1890, and was financed by Simon Sinas.   information
